Reading through the partnership agreement before signing it and becoming a director of a company.
"Some of the biggest challenges in relationships come from the fact that most people enter a relationship in order to get something. They're trying to find someone who's going to make them feel good. In reality, the only way a relationship will last is if you see your relationship as a place that you go to give, and not a place that you go to take."

Multi tasking: Cooking Sunday Roast on a new cooker, drinking red wine, watering my window box plants, Listening to vivaldi, reading forums, sending my hero at 36 roman cannon fodder and keeping an eye on 2 other accounts that I'm sitting (not bad for a mere man!)

Now wondering if I understand how income tax works or if my excel sheet is wrong. If someone earns £43,000 do they really only earn the same (after tax), as someone earning £32,000? To develop that, do people even bother earning between the £32,000 and £43,000 point as to earn in that range would get you less than the person earning £32,000. I really hope I'm being thick and that there is some cut off point where the 20% income tax ends and the 40% income tax begins. I'm tireddddd. I don't even know why I'm looking at this?!!?

@ squibles - How was your Sunday roast? Mega jealous. I only had time for a quick bowl of cereal today

pay no tax on first 10k (actually 9440 but I'm being lazy)

    person earning 32k pays 20% tax on 10k - 32k (22k, o/w 20% = 4.4k)

so 32k pays 4.4k tax (plus NI etc.)
    (effective tax rate = 13.75%)

    person earning 43k pays:
    20% tax on 10k - 34k (24k, o/w 20% = 4.8k)
    40% tax on 34k - 43k (9k, o/w 40% = 3.6k)
    so tax = 4.8k + 3.6k = 8.4k
    (effective tax rate = 19.5%)

    person earning 60k pays
    20% tax on 10k - 34k (24k, o/w 20% = 4.8k)
    40% tax on 34k - 60k (26k, o/w 40% =
    10.4k)
    so tax = 4.8k + 10.4k = 15.2k
    (effective tax rate = 25%)

(my parents always taught should assume pay around a third in taxes and a third for housing costs...which isn't a bad rule of thumb

I knew it would be like that but I just wanted the world to be a little bit more crazy. OVertired brain leads to a stupid brain.

Another third for housing costs! Thats sooo much. It makes sense I guess, but it still seems a ton. I guess its worse for you southerners.

    It's the real world :p

Hmmm, depends on the job... some jobs have london/south weighting or can be set regionally - it's mostly a pain for companies/organisations that set a national salary. A very london thing is the season ticket loan which helps a lot.

I probably pay 33% tax (once NI / VAT/council etc. gets included); 10% commuting costs (yes, ouch); mortgage is 15% (yay! salary has doubled since I started mortgage and reflects the current low interest rates) but bills/food for a household of seven is a small fortune

Now - Rushing about moving irrigators. Last week: 'You can go pick up that mile long line of pipes wgn (Long, Big, Hard, < dirty minds >, Heavy, Metal, 10ft long, 5 inch thick pipes), as we won't need to irrigate those anymore.' Today: 'I think we need to put on another 15mm on this field wgn (The one I picked up all the pipes for), you alright to sort it?!'... GREAT
